The Borrowed Bamboo House

This is a single storey flat roof extension 7m across to the back of a 1950s property to form an open plan kitchen/ dining space.

The design aims to achieve an illusion of larger space by placing glass (a 2.7m splashback window, frameless skylight and folding sliding doors) strategically to draw the eye back to the garden and to the side of the house where a row of bamboo plants is planted. Outside space is laid with oiled timber decking for a practical aesthetic.

To minimise project timeframe, the design is created with using permitted development rights. This statutory rights in non-Article 4 areas avoids a lengthy waiting period should it have gone through planning permission application.

The new space and original lounge is bathed in natural daylight throughout the day. As night falls, LED strip light washes white painted walls outside with a soothing glow.  GTA
